HOW TO CALCULATE THREAD

EXAMPLE:

UNC

Nut 1/4'' X 20


The nut must complete 20 full rotations (360 degrees) to travel 1” on the threaded rod.

UNF

Nut 1/4'' X 28

The nut must complete 28 full rotations (360 degrees) to travel 1” on the threaded rod, so more rotations for the same distance.


So the higher the number, the finer the threads.

UNC: Unified National Coarse

UNF: Unified National Fine

HOW TO CALCULATE THREAD

EXAMPLE:

UNC

Nut M16 X 2.00

After one full rotation (360 degrees), the nut traveled 2.00mm on the threaded rod.

UNF

Nut M16 X 1.50 UNF


After one full rotation (360 degrees), the nut traveled 1.50mm on the threaded rod so less distance between the threads than UNC.


So the lower the number, the finer the threads.
