A conveyor starts growling, a pulley develops play or a machine suddenly stops running smoothly: sometimes the culprit fits in the palm of your hand.

A ball bearing may not be the most exciting part in the shop, but it becomes very noticeable when it decides to quit.

And here’s the catch: a bearing that looks like the right bearing is not necessarily the right bearing.

Between metric and inch dimensions, 2RS seals, ZZ shields, C3 internal clearance and different versions within the same series, ordering by “6200” alone can leave out some important details.

Before ordering, listen to what the machine is telling you

A failing bearing may show up as growling, excessive play, unusual vibration, rising temperature or a component that no longer rotates as freely as it should.

But noise does not automatically mean the bearing is the only problem. A worn shaft, damaged housing, poor alignment or incorrect tension may also be involved.

Good rule:
diagnose first, order second. A new bearing cannot fix a worn-out housing.

6200 is a family, not the complete answer

The bearing series is a useful starting point, but it is not the end of the identification process.

At minimum, verify the bore, outside diameter and width.

Agri-Can carries, among others, a metric 6200 series with 2RS rubber seals, as well as a 6200A series combining an inch-size bore with a metric outside diameter.

This is where a caliper becomes your best friend.

“Looks like about an inch” is much less useful than knowing whether the shaft is actually 1", 15/16" or 25 mm.

Two bearings can look virtually identical on the bench while having slightly different bores— enough for one to fit perfectly and the other to be useless.

Likewise, an inch-size shaft can be used in equipment with a metric bearing housing.

Measure it. Don’t guess.

2RS, ZZ and C3: three small markings that can make a big difference

2RS

2RS generally indicates rubber seals on both sides of the bearing.

They help retain grease and reduce the entry of dirt, moisture and contamination, which can be useful in agricultural and industrial environments.

ZZ

ZZ generally means metal shields on both sides. They provide a different type of protection and typically less contact than rubber seals.

That does not make ZZ automatically better or worse than 2RS. It means the operating conditions and application matter.

C3

C3 means the bearing has greater-than-normal radial internal clearance.

Important:
C3 does not mean “heavy-duty bearing” or “premium version.” It is not an automatic upgrade.

The correct internal clearance depends on factors such as shaft and housing fits, operating temperature and load.

Two bearings with identical outside dimensions may therefore not be directly interchangeable simply because one carries a C3 suffix.

Check twice. Repair once.

Before disassembly, shut down and lock out the equipment according to the proper safety procedure.

Once the bearing is accessible, record the complete marking on the bearing, measure all three dimensions and inspect the shaft and housing for corrosion, heat marks, wear or excessive play.

During installation, follow the machine manufacturer’s recommendations for fits, mounting procedures and lubrication.

A good bearing installed crooked with a hammer may not remain a good bearing for very long.

It may sound like a lot of attention for a small part.

But tearing down the same conveyor twice because a thirty-second measurement seemed optional is rarely a great way to spend a Friday afternoon.
