The gearbox: the heart everybody forgets… until it makes a funny noise

A gearbox can look perfectly fine from the outside while quietly preparing an unpleasant surprise. Before winter, take a few minutes to inspect for oil leaks around the seals, unusual shaft play, loose mounting bolts and proper oil level.

If you are installing a replacement gearbox, do not skip the oil. Agri-Can’s T27D-40 and T27D-1-3/4 gearboxes are shipped without oil and must be filled with SAE90 gear oil up to the level plug once the gearbox is mounted horizontally.

A brand-new gearbox with no oil is still brand new — just not for very long.

540 or 1000 RPM? This is not the place for “it should fit”

Before ordering anything, verify PTO speed, spline count, shaft diameter and length, and the gearbox ratio.

For example, the T27D-40 uses a 1:1 ratio, a 1-3/8" 6-spline PTO input and a 40 mm blower-fan shaft. The T27D-1-3/4 is also 1:1, but is designed around a 1000 RPM 1-3/4" 20-spline PTO input. Agri-Can

Those are not boring catalogue details. They are the difference between installing the part and putting it right back in the box.

Check the PTO before it starts shaking

Inspect the complete PTO driveline while you are there: universal joints, telescoping tubes, guards, yoke locking systems and general wear.

A universal joint beginning to seize, a tube that no longer slides freely or a yoke with excessive play can turn a small fall maintenance job into a complete shutdown in the middle of a storm.

Agri-Can also provides a resource centre for identifying and measuring Bondioli & Pavesi PTO components and for checking how to shorten a PTO shaft correctly.

A shear bolt is not an invitation to raid the random-bolt drawer

A shear bolt is supposed to fail before something much more expensive does.

So no, “it fits through the hole” does not automatically make it the right bolt.

Keep a few correct replacement shear bolts in the tractor or shop. The day your blower finds a frozen rock, you will be glad you are not hunting for hardware while the snow keeps falling.

Chains, sprockets and bearings: small parts that can stop a very big machine

A loose chain, worn sprocket or dry bearing does not need to be expensive to ruin your day.

Check chain tension, sprocket alignment, stiff links and bearings with excessive play or resistance. Ten minutes of inspection is a lot cheaper than a chain jumping off and trying to redesign the chain guard.

Test it while the weather is still friendly

Once the inspection is complete, run the blower at low speed in a clear area and listen.

Unusual vibration? Knocking? A bearing starting to sing? A gearbox getting hotter than expected? Now is when you want to find out.

And of course: PTO disengaged, engine shut off and key removed before putting your hands anywhere near the mechanism. Snowblowers have absolutely no sense of humour.

Why do it now?

Because in October, you still have time to measure, order, receive and repair properly.

In January, you mostly have time to swear.

Before pushing the blower into the corner and saying, “it worked fine last year,” give it fifteen minutes.

The first real snowstorm will be busy enough without turning the snowblower into a repair project.
